C-R-Y

Cardiac Risk in the Young (C-R-Y) has many ambitious projects to enable it to provide the support and research to help save young lives.

Helpful Information

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions.

CRY has many ambitious projects to enable it to provide the support and research to help save young lives.

Its programme of activities strives to prevent these tragedies through:

  • Our National Screening Programme
  • Funding medical research into young sudden cardiac death
  • Developing the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology
  • Raising awareness of the risk of undetected cardiac conditions in young people

CRY also supports young people diagnosed with life-threatening cardiac conditions through:

  • the myheart Network

and those affected by young sudden cardiac death by:

  • Offering a fast-track expert cardiac pathology service through the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology
  • Providing a Bereavement Support Service to help those who have suffered a loss
  • Providing information and literature free of charge

Important Statistics:

  • At least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people are dying every week in the UK of undiagnosed heart conditions.
  • 80% of young sudden cardiac deaths occur with no prior symptoms.
  • In Italy where screening is mandated for all people involved in organised sport, they have reduced the number of young sudden deaths in sport by 89%.
  • 1 in 300 people that CRY tests will have a potentially life threatening condition.
  • 1 in 100 people that CRY tests are identified with a less serious cardiac condition, that could cause problems later in life.
  • CRY has now screened over 70,000 young people at over 1,200 screening days since the charity began.
  • Over 1,000 bereaved families have now received support and advice from Alison Cox MBE, CRY’s Founder & Chief Executive.
  • 21 research fellows have been trained by CRY and over £2,000,000 has been invested into researching young sudden cardiac death.
